How to Properly Fertilize Your Lawn

Hopefully we have convinced you that it is important to fertilize your lawn. Now we want to teach you how to do it!

Every lawn is different; therefore what each lawn requires to achieve peak growth and performance varies from house to house. One ingredient that is vitals for all lawns, however, is nitrogen. In fact, nitrogen is every lawn’s most important ingredient. Fertilizer delivers nitrogen to your lawn so it can handle the energy demands placed on it while it’s growing.

In general, you should be fertilizing your lawn to:

  1. Promote new leaf and root growth

  2. Aid your lawn in repairing itself from traffic, sun, and pest damage

  3. Aid your lawn in reducing and controlling weeds

  4. Replace nutrients if you regularly bag your lawn clippings

Step 1: Identify your grass type

You don’t need to know the exact species of grass you have. All you need to know is what climate you live in. Is it a cool, transitional, or warm climate? That breakdown is really simple:

  1. Northern United States = Cool Season Grasses

  2. Middle United States = Transitional Season Grasses

  3. Southern United States = Warm Season Grasses

Where you live will determine what kind of fertilizer you should use. You don’t want to use fertilizer designed for Warm Season Grasses if you live in Wisconsin.
